An Introduction to Pearl E-Pro Live Electronic Drum Set

By DrumsAcousticMuse

One of the first electronic drum sets made to look and feel like real drums, Pearl E-pro drums come with a large library of drum samples, and both brass and plastic cymbals.

E-pro live drums are made from real wood (poplar), using the same “Superior Shell Technology” as is applied to all other Pearl Drums, including their high-end Pearl Masterworks drum sets.

The Pearl E-pro live also has real drum heads, being made of kevlar and not mesh or rubber like most acoustic drum kits.

The sound module associated with the Pearl E-pro is called the REDBOX, which stands for real electronic drums.

The e-pro live module comes standard with one hundred drum kits, and 1000 drum sounds from which you can choose and build your own custom drum sets.

After listening closely to these Pearl E-pro drum samples, I've found them to be overall quite natural sounding. When played a certain way it can even be hard to tell that they are coming from electronic drums at all.

Pearl E-pro Live Drum Sound

The Pearl E-Pro has the capability of getting some of the best electronic drum sounds available, even in its standard format.

But if you truly want to get lush, full-bodied drum tones out of your Pearl E-pro live electronic drums, then you will likely appreciate another feature that is being offered by Pearl Drums with the Pearl E-Pro Live Electronic Drum Set.

The E-Pro Live has a memory switch function which allows you to take your entire catalog of drum samples, after saving them to your computer via USB, and fill the REDBOX's entire memory instead with one huge drum kit.

Some of these memory switch drum kits are free with the Pearl E-pro live, but most have to be purchased through Pearl Drums. Because this is a new project, there are only a few of these hi- definition kits available for the Pearl E-pro so far, but the samples I heard of each of them sounded top-notch.

Bonus Features of the Pearl E-Pro Live Electronic Drum Set

Furthermore, Pearl E-Pro Live electronic drums offer a couple of huge additional features, which should definitely be appreciated by any drum set artist.

The first of the these is that the Pearl E-pro electronic drum heads can quickly be replaced with actual drum heads to make the E-pro live a performance ready, acoustic drum kit.

Second, all of the drum hardware is included in the package, and the Pearl E-Pro Live electronic drum set comes standard with real crash and ride cymbals.

As paramount as the above features are to your electronic drum kit playing experience, my favorite aspect of the Pearl E-Pro Live is its capacity to add additional drums and percussion to the existing setup.

This capacity to add more electronic drums is made possible because the REDBOX module hosts more ports than are filled by the original drum set, so if you wanted to add, for example, an additional floor tom or rack tom to your Pearl E-Pro, you could easily rout those signals through the REDBOX sound module.

All in all, the Pearl E-Pro is without a doubt the best electronic drum set available, and has quality drum samples and a user-friendly sound module.

Now this is just plain awesome...as a guitar player, this is something I could really get into. Electronic music is definitely the future, and as musicians we need to only embrace the new technology.

thanks for the comment-ryanallan, i agree with you.

These drums sound legit. but the best part is that they can be played both electronically AND acoustically!

I'm a hobby drummer who loves Neil Peart and I have a setup based on his acoustic drum setup...but I always love seeing new stuff and I find this simply awesome. Thanks for sharing this hub and look forward to more in the future.
