Used Drum Sets are often in just as good of condition as when they were first bought.

And although there are some items in life which are just better to have new, as an experienced drummer who has played on many used drum sets for sale, i can tell you that acoustic drum sets that have been used often play just as well, if not better, than their new counterparts.

And, as long as the technology is intact, any used electronic drum set will be just as good as new.

Many parents will buy their kids new cheap drum sets, thinking that they might get into it, but the kid will proceed to play for about two months and then quit.

This happens all the time, and then the drum kit will go up for sale, now as a used drum kit, but its still in just as good of shape as it was.

I would like to touch briefly on things to look for in used drum sets, and how to properly take care of your used drums once you get them.

A Few Things To Look For in Used Drum Sets

When, looking at a used drum set for sale, don't be scared off by a couple of nicks or scratches- these won't affect the sound.

Also, cheap drum sets are not necessarily worse that their more expensive counterparts. There are many cheap used drum sets out there that will give you the drum sound you want.

However, you do want to make sure that you get right up close to the drums- and i know it sounds weird- smell them. You want to make sure that the finish hasn't worn off, and they aren't growing mildew.

You also want to make sure that the hardware isn't rusty. Used drum equipment will often rust over time. If it does, its possible to replace it, but it will add significantly to your costs and labor.

Beyond that, it is absolutely critical to check that the drum shells themselves aren't warped out of shape.

The best way to do this, If you can, is to measure both the depth and diameter of the drum from as many positions around the drum's shell as possible.

Warped drum shells can severely affect the tone of the drums, and although they can sometimes be fixed by a professional, this is a time intensive process that you don't need.

If the shells are warped, I would recommend looking elsewhere for your used drum set.

How To Take Care Of Your Used Drums

Keep them out of humidity! Unless they are Pearl Drums, they do not have a durable enough finish to rest moisture or extreme temperatures for very long.

The basement is probably your best bet, because the drums will be cool, and dry down there which is exactly what you want.

Also, no matter what the drum kit, choosing the right drum heads will maximize your sound potential. Any of Evans, Aquarian, or Remo drum heads would be my recommendation.

Once you choose the right drum heads for your style, you are well on your way to having a great drum sound, and should learn how to tune drums.

Finally, when you are traveling, use drum cases for your drums. It looks more professional, it makes them easier to carry, and it will definitely lessen your potential for damage in the long run.

That's It! Enjoy finding your the second hand drum kit of your dreams!
